About Project

CircularBlue™ is an experimental ocean initiative by RHINOSHIELD that explores how design, technology, and circular thinking can work together to address ocean waste—before it causes irreversible damage to our environment. CircularBlue™ extends this thinking beyond the products we make, asking a broader question: Can the same principles of thoughtful design and resource circularity help reshape how we respond to waste already entering our oceans and waterways?

At the heart of CircularBlue™ is system design, bringing together ocean science, engineering, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and circular design into an integrated system to connect observation, identification, collection, and future resource recovery. Its first prototype, ChangeMaker, combines a solar-powered floating platform with AI-enabled drones and automated retrieval technologies. AI-enabled aerial observation helps identify and locate accumulated waste, while automated technologies support targeted collection. The solar-powered floating platform provides a foundation for lower-impact operation and future environmental monitoring, adapting to different coastal and river conditions.

CircularBlue™ looks beyond removing waste from water. Its longer-term ambition is to explore how recovered materials can connect with sorting, material recovery, regeneration, and new applications. By connecting ocean waste back into usable resources, it reflects RHINOSHIELD's approach: considering not only where materials come from, but where they can go next, extending circular thinking from cleanup to resource value.

Ocean and waterway environments are complex, and there is no single solution to plastic pollution. CircularBlue™ is therefore intentionally experimental—a platform for continuous testing, interdisciplinary collaboration, and design iteration. The initiative brings together expertise across ocean science, engineering, technology, manufacturing, and circularity to explore what can work under real-world conditions, treating design as the process of connecting problems and systems that evolve over time.

Looking ahead, CircularBlue™ envisions a modular and scalable model that could be adapted across coastlines, rivers, and other waterways by connecting renewable energy, AI-enabled observation, automated collection, environmental data, and resource regeneration. CircularBlue™ is not presented as the final answer to ocean waste, but a step toward a better one—where technology enables action, design connects the system, and circularity gives recovered materials another future through ongoing experimentation and action.
