LAKAT SUSTAINABLE SNEAKERS redefines daily footwear by redesigning traditional sneakers with regional agricultural byproducts. Rather than applying a single eco-friendly material partially, the project examines the sneaker by its components—upper, insole, and outsole—and replaces each with locally sourced materials.
The upper is made by hand-weaving fibers extracted from discarded pineapple leaves using traditional handloom techniques. The extraction process utilizes solar-powered technology to reduce environmental burdens from energy use. By connecting regional agricultural byproducts, traditional weaving techniques, and clean production technology into a single manufacturing process, sustainability is reflected from material selection to production.
The insole is made of 100% pineapple fibers. A technology that converts refined raw pineapple fibers into non-woven fabrics is applied to utilize the material required inside the shoes. The outsole mixes farmed natural rubber with leftover fiber scraps generated during the spinning process of pineapple fibers. Through a structure where byproducts from making one part are reused as materials for another, manufacturing waste is reduced and resources are designed to circulate within the product.
This approach is a design review starting from what materials should be used to build each part of a traditional sneaker. By utilizing pineapple leaves for the uppers and insoles and reusing leftover fibers from processing for the outsoles, the utilization range of agricultural byproducts is expanded to the entire product. Combining traditional handcrafting with new material processing technologies allows regional resources and skills to lead to modern product manufacturing.
LAKAT addresses the high pollution and waste of traditional shoe manufacturing with regional materials and a circular production structure. Beyond creating new sneaker shapes, it designs the materials and production process itself, demonstrating a low-environmental-impact shoe manufacturing method that reduces manufacturing waste and carbon emissions.
